Learn how to resolve Zip export errors on Figma to optimize your design and development workflow.

Key points to remember

Many Figma users encounter problems when exporting their designs. In fact, sometimes we end up with a compressed file (.zip) when we download an image or illustration from Figma, instead of a single file in png, svg, jpg or other format.

This problem can quickly become irritating (and I know what I'm talking about) if you have to decompress zip files every time before you get the right file.

Why does figma export in zip?

The main reason why Figma exports your files in zip format has to do with the structure of the file names and the export method:

  1. Exporting multiple elements : If you're exporting several elements simultaneously, Figma chooses to compress them into a zip file, so that all the assets are in a single file. In this case, it's not a problem. However, if you download a single file, you may find that you have to zip it.‍
  2. File names with slash ("/"): When the name of a frame, autolayout or page contains a slash ("/"), this indicates to Figma that it is a group or folder. To preserve the structure and include all elements within this group, Figma exports these files in a Zip file.

Solutions and tips to avoid unwanted zips

If you prefer to download individual files rather than a zip file, here's what you can do:

  1. Check file names: Make sure none of your file names, frame names, autolayout names, etc. contain a slash ("/"). Rename them if necessary to prevent Figma from interpreting them as folders. You can, for example, use a hyphen ("-") instead.
  2. Export only the required element: Select only the element you wish to export. Avoid selecting groups or frames that could result in a zip export.
  3. Use the Figma desktop application: If possible, use the Figma desktop application rather than the web browser. This version is often more accurate in its exports and can avoid unwanted compressions.
  4. Check your export settings: Make sure you've selected the correct export format (PNG, JPG, etc.) and that the export settings are correct before uploading.
  5. Updates and support: Make sure your browser is up to date and compatible with the latest versions of Figma. Sometimes export problems can be solved by a simple software update.

And that's it! Now you know why Figma exports your files in zip format. If you still have problems, don't hesitate to contact Figma technical support for personalized assistance.
